Mount Etna & Taormina Day Trip from Palermo
Cross Sicily to its volcanic east: the slopes of Mount Etna and the clifftop theatre town of Taormina, in one full-day excursion from Palermo. From $135.
This is the big one: a full-day crossing of Sicily from Palermo to the island’s volcanic east, taking in Mount Etna — the highest active volcano in Europe — and Taormina, the clifftop town whose ancient theatre frames the smoking summit and the sea. It is the most ambitious excursion you can take from Palermo in a single day, and we’ll be honest about what that means: a long time on the road in exchange for two of Sicily’s most unforgettable sights. From $135 per person, rated 3.9/5 by 777 travellers, with free cancellation.
Mount Etna's smoking summit and Taormina's clifftop theatre — Sicily's volcanic east, reached on a long full-day trip from Palermo.Mount Etna: Europe’s Living Volcano
Mount Etna rises to around 3,350 metres above the Ionian coast of eastern Sicily, and it is not a museum piece — it is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, frequently venting ash and lava and reshaping its own summit with each eruption. UNESCO added Etna to its World Heritage list in 2013 as an outstanding natural site, citing its near-continuous eruptive history, documented for more than 2,700 years.
On this tour you reach the lower slopes — typically around the Rifugio Sapienza area at roughly 1,900 metres — where you can walk among recent lava flows and extinct craters, feel the crunch of black volcanic gravel underfoot, and look up toward the active summit. Cable car and 4x4 excursions higher up the mountain are usually available as paid extras, weather and volcanic activity permitting. The landscape is genuinely otherworldly: black earth, steaming vents, and views that stretch to the sea.
Taormina: A Theatre Above the Sea
From Etna the day continues to Taormina, perched on a cliff terrace high above the coast. Its great set piece is the Teatro Antico, an ancient theatre of Greek origin later rebuilt by the Romans, dramatically positioned so that the stage is framed by Mount Etna on one side and the blue Ionian Sea on the other — one of the most photographed views in all of Sicily.
Beyond the theatre, Taormina is a town for strolling: the Corso Umberto runs the length of the ridge, lined with cafés, boutiques, and belvederes; flower-filled lanes drop away toward the Isola Bella beach far below. Most itineraries give you free time here to wander, eat, and take in the panorama.
Be Honest with Yourself: This Is a Long Day
We rate this tour on its merits, and the 3.9/5 score from 777 guests is the most honest number on this page. It reflects one thing above all: distance. Taormina and Etna lie roughly 250 to 260 km from Palermo, around three hours’ drive each way, which makes for an 11-hour day with a lot of coach time. Reviewers who knew that going in tend to love the experience; those expecting a relaxed outing find the schedule tight.
A few things help:
- Start fresh. It’s an early departure and a late return — not the day to book before a dawn flight.
- Manage expectations on Etna. You visit the accessible lower slopes, not the active crater; the summit area depends on conditions.
- Bring layers. Etna is cold and windy even in summer; Taormina is warm. You’ll want both a jacket and sun protection.
- Sturdy shoes for the lava fields and Taormina’s steep lanes.
Is Etna & Taormina the Right Day Trip for You?
If you are only in Palermo for a short stay, a closer excursion may give you more for less effort. The comparison below sets Etna-and-Taormina against the two shorter options: the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento (about two hours each way) and the Monreale and Cefalù half-day (barely an hour out). Choose Etna and Taormina if seeing Europe’s great volcano is a bucket-list item and you don’t mind the miles. Choose a closer trip if you’d rather spend your hours sightseeing than sitting on a coach.
Planning the Rest of Your Sicily Trip
Whichever excursion you pick, don’t skip the capital itself. The Palermo street food walking tour is the best-rated experience in the city — 5 Sicilian tastings, a local guide, and the Cathedral, in just three hours — and the perfect counterpoint to a big day on the road.

"Absolutely fabulous. My etna was stunning. Two hour time allowed us to tale a guided tour on ATv. Through Lavazza fields and replanted forest. High point of day for all. Then lunch and walking in Taormina. Wonderful views plenty of assistance for us. Loved it great value. Enzo and Marco terrifi guide/drivers. We are 84 and use canes. No problems accessibility they insured we got a passenger atv at etna."
"Great way to get from Palermo to Etna and Taormina. Didn’t have to drive so got to take in the countryside. Our driver Ezno was very organized and communicated well. The trip is long but worth it."
"We had a great time with Marco as our driver. It was a rainy day with a lot of fog on Mount Etna, but we still enjoyed our time. Marco told us that it is always summer in Taormina and he was right, we had a wonderful time there exploring the town. It's a long drive to and from Palermo but there is a little break halfway through the drive. Thanks Marco for the great time we had!"

"Alles sehr gut gelaufen 👌🏻 Sehr gut organisiert, on time as planned. Our coach drivers Mario and his son Fillipo are total excellent care persons 👍🏻👍🏻 Everything on time, all info explain clear and friendly. I have a car sick, 🤢 Mario made sure I sit in front and it has helped me enjoying the ride. I do wish that the time slot for Etna visit as well as Taormina could be a bit longer, in example each 3 hours long instead of 2 hours, so we can enjoy it a bit relax. Otherwise this was awesome trip !! Really worth spending the day and the money. Mario, Fillipo - thank you much ! Cheers, GI"
"Trip is worth it, for the experience to be on the Etna and Taormina has incredible views, probably the best in Sicily. What I’ve noticed though is that these ‘tours’ in Sicily are not really tours, they’re more like transportation with some pre-recorded info in multiple languages. Even though they suggest roughly what to see, it’s up to you to organise it once there. Also none of the entry fees are included. Generally I find 2 hours is not enough to see everything properly but also the drive from/to Palermo is long."

"It’s impressive and absolutely worth the time and money :)"

"We had a great trip to Etna, worth visiting it! I wish we had a bit more time in Taormina. Overall great experience! Grazie!"
"mostly enjoyed the choice of quadbike or cable car up mt etna"

"I actually enjoyed my trip very much. The mount Etna was inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. It was very windy , and cold, we’ve spent 2 hrs at the bar where we’ve met a lovely family who recommended a few more trips for our holiday. So we did enjoy the stop nonetheless. Taormina is stunning, we’ve loved the shopping and streets. Beautiful. My only advice to the company would be to have a good procedure in place when things do go wrong. We had to wait for an hour as one of the cars broken down. You could tell people to have an extra hour in Taormina or leave just one driver waiting for the replacement car ( especially as family didn’t mind to wait). As much as I didn’t mind waiting at all but people tend to be disappointed with things like that and it spoils the trip - which is sad, because it was actually pretty good activity overall…"

"Our driver is polite, on time and take care of us well. The whole trip is smooth, efficient, easy and safe. Just the tour members need be more careful of the time to be punctual. I appreciate the service from our driver."

"The tour was well organized so we got on time and safe to every destination. The driver, Marco was very skilled and friendly, he explained everything I wanted to know about the Sicilian culture and made recommendations for my stay in Palermo. I recommend the company for the guides. The Mercedes car was comfortable and safe, which made the travel period more relaxing. I must specify that the climbing on Etna is not included in the tour, this is paid separately at the Etna chalets as it might be misinterpreted from the Getyourguide ad. Nevertheless it was a wonderful experience that I would book again anytime."

Everything you need to know before booking the full-day Etna and Taormina excursion from Palermo.
It is a full-day excursion of about 11 hours. Taormina and Mount Etna lie roughly 250 to 260 km from Palermo — around three hours' drive each way — so expect an early start, a late return, and a fair amount of coach time in exchange for two unforgettable sights.
Mount Etna rises to around 3,350 metres above the east coast of Sicily, making it the highest and most active volcano in Europe. Its exact height changes over time as eruptions reshape the summit.
Yes. Etna was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2013 as an outstanding natural site, recognised for its near-continuous eruptive activity, which has been documented for more than 2,700 years.
No — the tour visits the accessible lower slopes, typically around the Rifugio Sapienza area at roughly 1,900 metres, where you can walk among recent lava flows and extinct craters. Cable car and 4x4 trips higher up are usually available as paid extras, subject to weather and volcanic activity.
Taormina is a clifftop town famous for its Teatro Antico, an ancient theatre of Greek origin rebuilt by the Romans, positioned so the stage is framed by Mount Etna and the sea. The town also offers the elegant Corso Umberto, flower-filled lanes, and sweeping coastal views.
The 3.9/5 score from 777 guests mainly reflects the length of the day rather than the destinations, which are spectacular. Travellers who expect a long day with significant driving tend to love it; those hoping for a relaxed outing can find the schedule tight. We present the rating honestly so you can decide.
Bring layers — Etna is cold and windy even in summer, while Taormina is warm — plus sturdy shoes for the lava fields and Taormina's steep lanes. Add sun protection, water, and some cash or a card for lunch and optional Etna excursions.
It suits travellers who are comfortable with a long, active day. There is walking on uneven volcanic terrain and in hilly Taormina, and the early departure and late return make for a tiring schedule. It is not the ideal choice for very young children or anyone needing a gentle pace.
The fare covers round-trip coach transport across Sicily from Palermo. Lunch, the cable car or 4x4 excursions on Etna, and entry to attractions in Taormina are typically not included and are paid locally.
If seeing Europe's great volcano is a bucket-list goal and you don't mind the miles, choose Etna and Taormina. If your time is short, a closer excursion — the Valley of the Temples (about two hours each way) or Monreale and Cefalù (barely an hour out) — gives you more sightseeing for less travel.
Yes, when visited on an organised tour. Operators monitor volcanic activity and adjust itineraries accordingly, and the lower slopes visited on this trip are well away from active vents. Always follow your guide's instructions on the mountain.
